Solti returned to London in 1949, two years after his conducting debut on Decca (with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra), to record Haydn’s Symphony No.103 and Verdi’s Overture to La forza del destino with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Kingsway Hall. The Haydn and Verdi sessions, completed within two days, were the start of a fruitful relationship with producer John Culshaw and sound engineer Kenneth Wilkinson, partners in many of the conductor’s early symphonic recordings in London. In this 36-CD set, Decca celebrates Solti’s significant contribution to London’s musical life with a brand-new limited edition collection of symphonic, orchestral works & concerto recordings, a legacy rich in repertoire and artistic vitality. The London orchestras, with which he recorded, often jaded by overwork or beset by financial difficulties, absorbed Solti’s provocations in rehearsal and responded with a commitment in performance and on disc not always granted so readily to others. Solti, in his fierce pursuit of excellence, extracted the best from both the LPO and the LSO, and, in the studio, set down a remarkable recorded legacy that includes reference recordings of works by Bartók, Elgar, Haydn, Liszt and Mahler. To complete the set of Solti’s analogue Elgar recordings, the present anthology makes a brief detour from London to include his high-octane 1974 account of the “Enigma” Variations with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, an opera freighted with symbolism and destructive sensuality, introduces a bonus to this compilation of symphonic works, included here to house Solti’s complete analogue recordings of Bartók within a single boxed set.
